Numerous political figures, clergy, and students told statistics and personal stories about how people of color have been robbed of their humanity by brutal police and corrupt law figures for hundreds of years. They also encouraged me to go to City Council and make my voice heard about these issues.  My mom, Reverend Valerie Johnson, sang "What's Going On? by Marvin Gaye with Mr. Reginald Pittman playing trumpet in the background. She talked about her being the daughter of black parents, a proud black mother, grandmother, teacher, and minister, and that cops need to stop killing her-our- people. Robin Gwack talked about people of Latino, Asian, and other races being killed or being attacked just for being themselves. Keilan and Wini Scott couldn't grieve the loss of Wini's brother in peace because 5 cops burst through the ...

Next, I read up about the shooting of Phillip Pannell, a 16 year-old African American who was killed by Teaneck police officer Gary Spath, and Spath was acquitted from charges of manslaughter. And today, I saw on Selma that civil rights activist Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot dead by an Alabama State Trooper on February 26, 1965. It's all wrong that these African Americans, younger and older, got shot and the law enforcement figures that killed them didn't get jailed for it, except for for...

Photo courtesy of fairtradecampaigns.org.  This afternoon, I went to a Black Lives Matter event across from the Richard Rodda Community Center. I came to honor some lives who were lost to police brutality against being black or the coronavirus. It was an honor to support those lives and the Teaneck community that Sunday afternoon. My mother, Valerie Johnson, Dean of Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Minister of Christian International Church, and longtime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Bergen County Alumnae Chapter, honored Pastor Phillip Riddick who died from the coronavirus. Pastor Phil was a good man, a loving husband, and a dedicated father to four children. It was rough losing him, but he's in a better place, and his family is very much loved. May he rest in peace. Mom also honored Teaneck resident Janice Preschel. Ms. Preschel founded the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Te...
